Simply stated, frozen shoulder is severely restricted movement of the shoulder. Inflammation may cause adhesions to grow between joint surfaces. These adhesions freeze the joint, making it become so tight and stiff that it is virtually impossible to do simple daily tasks such as raising your arm to dress or combing your hair. The precise cause is unknown; however, it can occur after an injury to the shoulder or lack of use after surgery.
Physical Therapy Treatment Plan: To restore movement and reduce pain, treatment may include heat and gentle stretching by the physical therapist. In some cases, electrical stimulation, or TENS may be used to reduce pain.
After your initial prescription for physical therapy is completed, your physician and physical therapist will decide if you need to continue physical therapy or if you will be discharged to a home exercise program.
