The Balance System SD can identify a potential problem in just two minutes. The Biodex Fall Risk protocol of balance exercise will improve an individual’s ability to remain upright under challenging conditions. If a patient is found to be at risk of falling, we have an array of interventions and exercises that can help restore balance and reduce the risk. Intervention is supported by patient education and exercise plans.

If you’ve had radiation treatment or a doctor had to remove one or more of your lymph nodes, you may experience something called lymphedema. Lymphedema is a build-up of lymph fluid in the fatty tissues just underneath your skin. Removing lymph nodes changes the flow of lymph fluid in the body. This makes it harder for fluid to flow out of the affected area. If the remaining lymph vessels cannot drain enough fluid from these areas, the excess fluid builds up and causes swelling, or lymphedema. While this condition may be uncomfortable, there is something you can do about it.

Hand therapy is the art and science of rehabilitation of the upper extremity or limb. This includes the hand, wrist, forearm, elbow and shoulder, which may not be functioning properly due to any number of problems. Hand therapy is considered to be a specialized area of physical and occupational therapy. Injuries to the upper extremities can be complex, involving bone, tendon, nerve and/or skin. Recovery is equally dependent upon expert physician care and early, appropriate hand therapy.
The purpose of traction is to apply a force that draws two adjacent bones apart from each other in order to increase their shared joint space. There are a number of medically accepted uses for spinal traction, which include the mobilization of soft tissues or joints, decompression of pinched nerve roots, increased circulation, and it relieves pressure on the spinal cord. Traction is sometimes given to people with spinal stenosis, as it helps to make space around the compressed spinal cord. In any case, the improved circulation has an added, indirect benefit of decreasing chemicals in damaged tissues brought about by inflammation.
Advanced Physical Therapy Center’s Concussion Management Program offers a simple baseline test, concussion assessment and training program using the Biodex Balance System SD and the ImPACT Program. The Biodex Balance System SD is a sophisticated measuring and training device for static and dynamic balance testing and training. It is used by leading hospitals, rehabilitation centers and national sports teams throughout the U.S. The Biodex Balance System SD is designed to systematically test the sensory selection process by compromising available somatosensory, visual, and vestibular senses while measuring an athlete’s ability to minimize postural sway. Biodex has software that includes the option of conducting a modified version of a Balance Error Scoring System (BESS) test of postural stability, popular for concussion management.
Functional Dry Needling is a mechanical-device assisted manual therapy technique within the scope of physical therapy practice. It is a skilled intervention that uses a thin filiform needle to penetrate the skin and stimulate underlying myofascial trigger points, muscular and connective tissues for the management of neuromusculoskeletal pain and movement impairments. It is used in conjunction with traditional physical therapy.
The needles used are typically much smaller than hypodermic needles, and are solid rather than hollow, with a rounded rather than a beveled tip with the cutting edge of a hypodermic needle. Dry Needling is different than acupuncture with regards to the evaluation tools used, the assessment, the application, and the overall intended goal. The treatment protocols are based on Dr. Levitt’s work in orthopedics.
Electrical stimulation uses an electrical current to cause a single muscle or a group of muscles to contract. By placing electrodes on the skin in various locations the physical therapist can recruit the appropriate muscle fibers. Contracting the muscle via electrical stimulation helps strengthen the affected muscle. The physical therapist can change the current setting to allow for a forceful or gentle muscle contraction. Along with increasing muscle strength, the contraction of the muscle also promotes blood supply to the area that assists in healing.

Hydrotherapy is simply water therapy. Used a therapy modality, the water temperature and agitation is varied depending on the treatment goals. Warmer water induces vasodilation, drawing blood into the target tissues. Increased blood flow delivers needed oxygen and nutrients, and removes cell waste. The warmth also decreases muscle spasm, relaxes tense muscles, relieves pain, and can increase range of motion.
Kinesiology taping is a definitive rehabilitative taping technique that is designed to facilitate the body’s natural healing process while providing support and stability to muscles and joints without restricting the body’s range of motion.

The term “manual therapy” refers to a hands-on treatment of muscles, tendons, ligaments, and joints as opposed to using a device or machine. In manual therapy, therapists use their hands to put pressure on muscle tissue and manipulate joints in an attempt to decrease pain caused by muscle spasm, muscle tension, and joint dysfunction. Manual therapy techniques aim to increase function as well.
